How to care for freshly cut roses

Dear Rose Enthusiast,

Our rose farm grew out of our shared love for the magic and imperfect grace of roses. Both of our grandmothers were rosarians, and both of our families were passionate about gardening and about leading the “good life.” So when we decided to make a change from farming avocadoes and lemons on our Carpinteria Valley farm, we were attracted to the romance and splendor and charm of roses.

From the start, we were interested in growing varieties that people rarely see outside of private gardens. And we wanted to grow old world roses that aren’t cultivated anywhere else in the country. Rather than produce the industry standard–long, single-stem roses with little or no fragrance, we produce almost exclusively old roses, European varieties, and pre-1950 American hybrid teas. Our roses have unusual shapes and colors and scents that commercial growers have bred out for longer life as a cut flower.

We also encourage our rose bushes to grow naturally, with multiple branches producing sprays of buds and blossoms. When we cut our roses for our clients, we cut the whole spray–sometimes with up to ten blossoms–to use in bouquets. In addition to the old world roses we grow, we are also testing a number of not-yet-released rose varieties for their growing characteristics.

Our goal has always been to produce the most beautiful, most fragrant, most romantic roses possible. We currently grow over 120 rose varieties on 18,000 plants, and we are continually re-evaluating which roses grow best on our farm in order to provide our customers with the most extraordinary blooms.
